HOW TO GIVE YOUR PHOTOS ALL THE FALL VIBES!
Well friends we are saying hello to fall & as one season changes that means our photos will start shifting as well. Regardless if you purposely change your images or not to match any news feed, as a season changes so will your photos. Between the clothes you wear, the colors of nature in your background and so much more your photos will automatically change with it. However, this blog post is all about tips that you can do to be more mindful that we are in fall and what you can do to give your photos more of a fall like vibe. But before we start we are actually going to break these down into two categories; 1. What you can do before the photo. & 2. What you can do in the editing process. & before we chat about these two categories let’s chat about colors.
COLORS
Fall is filled with so many beautiful colors; oranges, soft & dark browns, olive greens, mustard yellows, just to name a few. However, fall is also filled with trendy colors each year & this year soft baby pink and light blue take the tops of the trendy colors. The #1 thing I tell people when they are trying to keep a cohesive feed is;
If you cannot change the colors in your background then change the colors in your outfit. If you cannot change the colors in your outfit then change the colors in your background.
What You Can Do Before The Photo
Your Background
During the fall season your backgrounds are literally endless if you are wanting to create more of a fall vibe;
A pumpkin patch,
an apple orchard,
your front porch with fall decorations,
the park where the trees have changed and maybe with leaves falling
literally your grocery store with all the pumpkins out front.
All of these locations offer the fall colors you are looking for and with that quote in mind at the top, you can change the colors of your outfit and still achieve that fall vibe.
Your Clothes & Accessories.
Not all of our locations will be in Pinterest perfect backgrounds, so in that case this is where changing your outfit to have more of a fall like vibe would be highly beneficial. Let’s say you are downtown and you want to add more white to your feed, so you find this epic white brick wall. White brick is universal when it comes to seasons, but it is your outfit that is going to have a fall vibe. I am not saying don’t wear a fall outfit to the locations I gave above, yes, please still be creative, but what I am saying is at those locations your colors are already in there so you don’t have to be so mindful as you would be with a location that does not offer fall vibes. So, let me give you some fun ideas for outfits;
Throw on a fun felt hat (This is where those trendy colors are so fun, but also the traditional colors are perfect too.)
Brown Boots or Booties.
Hunter Green Jacket
Mustard shirt or pants
Coffee Cup in hand
A Fall bag
Chambray dress or button down (remember light blue is going to be so trendy)
My friend this list could literally go on & I want to encourage you to be 100% creative as possible. Your outfits should always inspire you and your creativity. If you are missing these fall colors in your wardrobe don’t go buy a new closet. No, start adding pieces in one at a time.
& Remember if you cannot change a color of a background, then change the colors in your outfits. If you cannot change the colors in your outfit, then change the colors in your background.
What You Can Do In The Editing Process
Warm Those Photos Up
If your photo can handle being warmed up a touch then I highly suggest to warm your photo up with the “Temp” tool. Warming your image up gives it that cozy feel that truly shows off fall. The timing of when we take photos will determine the amount of temperature that is exposed; the earlier in the morning the cooler the images will be and the later in the day the warmer they will be. So, if you feel as though your image could handle a little bit more coziness then warm that bad boy up.
Be Extra Mindful Of Your Highlights
Your highlights are where you give your image that extra something. While highlights are helpful in that way if you are trying to achieve a more fall vibe photo bring those highlights down just a touch cause it will bring those highlighted elements down in your image and for them to not be bold.
The Vibrance Tool
This is 100% a total preference and to be honest in the fall I do not touch the vibrance tool, but if you are wanting to give off more of a softer not so bold color vibe then I would totally say bring the vibrance down. Fall is very vibrant with color, but more traditional fall pieces are very soft in color. Your vibrance tool will help achieve that overall look.
Tailored Presets
Be mindful of the presets you are using. Some presets are built around exposing summer like colors. For Example; my Ville Preset is 100% built around indoor lighting, but it is also built around trendier turquoise that is so very popular in spring and summer. But my Dixie J Original is built around olive greens and softer blues and purples. So if you are using a preset that offers summer vibes then add a bit of a warmer feel and pull your vibrance & highlights down a touch. There are so many presets out there like my Dixie J Original that can be tailored to the season, but there are also presets out there that are made for a particular season in mind.
My friends during this fall season have fun with your photos. It will take time to be mindful of all the different pieces especially the ones that you can do before the photos, but I truly believe in you and your creativity. Add fall favorites your fall favorites; like football games, pumpkin carving, candy & all the other things that make fall for you. Did you learn something and apply it? How did you use these tips creatively? Show me all the things I would love to see your after images. You can tag me on instagram at @dixiejwilson or email me at hellofriend@dixiej.com
